The Effect of Gravity on Projectile Motion

As part of the 7th Grade Physics unit on gravity, Edlin students explored the effect of gravity on projectile motion.  Each student was given a selection of material to design and construct a M&M shooter capable of demonstrating projectile motion. This engineering project relied heavily on creativity, ingenuity, and problem-solving skills.

The students used their M&M shooters to test a classic physics thought experiment: Will an object fired from a certain height and an identical object dropped from the same height at the same time hit the ground simultaneously?

The M&Ms should hit the ground simultaneously due to the independent nature of an object’s horizontal motion and its vertical motion. The objects are affected equally by gravity, which becomes clear when viewing the high-speed video taken in class.
