Hooves on Horses – Understanding Multiplication
As an introduction to multiplication, Edlin School first graders filled in a chart with objects that come in groups of two, three, four, etc., up to items that come in tens. With their lists compiled, the students began to write their very own “Thing that Come in Group” stories.
Our students use logical reasoning to determine how many hooves on 7 horses. As they learn they are creating self-discoveries about multiplication including identity, commutative, and the zero property of multiplication.
Students have a vested interest in the solving the problems because they are part of the process. Using this visual approach students begin to grasp the real meaning behind multiplication.
